Harrell

Dear Northglade family,

You hear the children talk about the Great Lessons. What are the Great Lessons?
The Great Lessons are Montessori's five major stories given by the instructors at the beginning of school. They dramatize the known truths of the universe and the progression of human civilization. They present in turn the creation of the earth, the beginning of life, the coming of human beings, and the tool of human communication, that is, language and mathematics. The law and order of the universe gradually become clear to the children through each successive story. Montessori called the five major stories the Great Lessons.

----------------------

ATTENDANCE

Parents and Guardians please be reminded, If you are making arrangements to pick up your child early please have arrangements (including phone calls) made prior to 3:30 p.m. It is almost impossible to connect with your child when a phone message is put through during dismissal. Please help the office by writing permission slips for your child to ride other busses or go to their friends house.

THANK YOU

Thank you to all parents who are respectful of Mr. Allen who serves outside in the morning to direct parents to the parking lot drop-off for your children, and helping the buses have a safe passage for dropping off their passengers, and run more timely.

READING

Part of our Professional Development in the beginning of the school year was about the implementation of the new 90/30 Literacy Block. Currently all Northglade students are engaged in 90 minutes of Reading and 30 minutes of Writing daily. The District is expecting better outcomes as a result of District wide implementation of this Literacy component of the Montessori Program.

Northglade's Reading programs includes Reading A-Z, which comes with lesson plans, Comprehension worksheets and exams. SRA Reading Cards, Accelerated Reading, which also a leveled reading program through our Library. After reading their book, students take comprehension test on the computer.

Montessori Education "Saving the World one Child at a time."

-------------------------------------

IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER FOR OCTOBER

MEAP Assessment Gr. 3-6 Continue this week Language Session 2 10/21/08

(MEAP) Math Makeup Monday, October 20 grades 3-6

MEAP Science and Social Studies Thursday, 10/23/08 grades 5&6 only

MEAP Makeup Dates Language Session 2 10/27/08. We are looking forward to a wonderful and fun year of learning. It is amazing how the staff and community have embraced me as the new leader of our school. We greeted many parent at our recent Open House. The Teachers hosted panel discussions in the Cafeteria while others visited the classrooms.

One of my Visions for Northglade is to have parents involved in the building and in the lives of the children we serve. It is critical that we all come together for the education of our children. I am a firm believer that a truly successful school is one where parents invest time and effort in the educational process of their children. I welcome you to come and take an active part in your child's day whenever possible.

Please come and take advantage of our computer equipped Parent Room across from the office. Sign in at the office, and ask for the key.

---------------------------------

Attendance Policy

Punctuality and attendance are very important to your child's education. Children should come to the school by 8:30 a.m. to eat and socialize. Parents are requested to notify the school (337-0700) as soon as possible when a student will be tardy or absent. For your convenience, an answering machine is available when the school office is closed.

Instruction begins at 8:53 a.m. Please be sure your child is on time. Tardy students must report directly to the office for a late slip in order to be admitted to class. If you are making arrangements to pick up your child early, please have arrangements (including phone calls) made prior to 3:30 p.m.

For the safety of your child, please do not drop children off in the turn-a-round. We ask that you use the parking lot south of the building.

Reading

In all classrooms reading is required at every level for a minimum time period daily. Reading improves with practice and there are different ways parents can ensure their children practice reading. You can read to your child, your child can read aloud to you or a younger child. Your child may read by himself/herself for a designated time period, which you may set. Sometimes children are more encouraged to read when they see parents and other siblings reading,so set aside time to read along with your child.

Montessori Education "Saving the World one child at a time"

----------------------------

Important Dates to remember for October

MEAP Assessment Gr. 3-6 October 14-23, 2008

(MEAP) Makeup Dates October 23-28th

Cognitive Abilities Test Gr. 2 - During MEAP testing

PTO meeting October 16@ 6:30

PTO sponsored Skate Night Thursday, October 30 at Roller World 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Come get involved in our parent group. Certain types of parent involvement can lead to improved student achievement, better attendance, and a more positive attitude toward school. It can also lead to an awareness of options for future education and work.
Teachers benefit from parent involvement, too. They gain a better understanding of families' backgrounds, cultures, concerns, goals and needs. They also develop improved communication skills as they reach out to work with parents.
Parents benefit from their involvement in education by gaining a better understanding of school
programs and policies. They may also develop skills that help them help their child. Finally, parents often become more aware that the challenges they face in parenting are shared by others in the community. Given all these benefits, it is clear that parent involvement is important for you and your child. Set aside time to increase your involvement with your child's school.
Source: Joyce L. Schools across the state have reported in an increased number of children with asthmatic conditions. As a precautionary measure, we will discuss the following questions at our PTO meeting in November.

What is Asthma?

Asthma (Az-muh) is a chronic disease that affects your airways (the tubes that carry air in and out of your lungs). The inside walls of your airways become inflamed (swollen) making the airways very sensitive and strongly reactive to allergens.

What are the Symptoms?

The symptoms of asthma for most children include coughing, wheezing and difficulty breathing, and they may be brought on or triggered by having a cold, changes in the weather, exercise or exposure to cigarette smoke, pollen, mold, animals, and pollution. If you can learn the things that trigger your child’s asthma problems, it can help to avoid them.

How Do You Prevent an Asthma Attack?

The goal of treating asthma is that your child be symptom free and able to perform his/her normal activities. Asthma should not usually limit your child’s activities, unless s/he is having an asthma attack at the time. In addition to avoiding triggers, asthma is prevented by taking daily preventative medications. Read more about asthma at http://www.pediatrics.about.com/

November’s Grace & Courtesy Focal Points:

Walk slowly and use care when transporting lunches in bins.
When delivering messages, use good eye contact, clearly state the reason for your visit, and wait patiently for a reply.
Use actions and words that show appreciation for others.

Needs List for our Fine School

1) Napkins and cups for snacks.

2) Cleaning supplies (child-size brooms, dust pans, sweepers, dust cloths, and buckets). Room fresheners (plug-ins & potpourri).

Welcome to the American Montessori Society Dedicated Team Members

This week we are excited to share our work with a group of Montessori experts. We will hold conversations about best practices. As reported at the PTO meeting earlier this year, we look forward to receiving useful information about our school and sharing it with you in the future.

“It is the child who makes the man (or woman), and no man (or woman) exists who was not made by the child s/he once was.”
--Dr. Maria Montessori

____________________________________________________________

IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER - MARK YOUR CALENDARS! – WE LOVE NORTHGLADE!!!

· November 7th – 9th – MEAP Testing for Grades 5th – 6th Encourage students to do their personal best

· Thursday & Friday, November 8th & 9th – Half Days for all students

· Tuesday, November 13th – School Improvement/PTO Meeting (Pizza served at 6:00 p.m. & free babysitting provided!) At Northglade, we take precautionary measures to reduce the risk of affected students having reactions to peanuts. If your children have a reaction to peanuts, a doctor should be consulted. Tests can help diagnose peanut allergies. An allergy to peanuts involves an immune system response (a reaction to proteins found in peanuts). Exposure to peanuts (through direct or cross contact and inhalation) may cause immediate reactions, such as itching, redness, swelling, shortness of breath, wheezing, nausea, abdominal pain, lightheadedness or loss of consciousness. Common foods that can trigger peanut allergy systems include (but not limited to) peanut butter and flour, nuts, energy bars, salad dressing, grain breads, etc. Read more about peanut allergies online at http://www.mayoclinic.com/. or http://www.peanutallergykids.com/.

October’s Grace & Courtesy Focal Points:
· Use eye contact when speaking or listening to others.
· Control body parts while moving around the environment.
· Maintain a clean and organized work space in all areas in the school.

Needs List for Our Fine School
1) Plants to add life and beauty in the learning environment.
2) Cleaning supplies (child-size brooms, dust pans, sweepers, dust cloths, and buckets).
3) Room fresheners (plug-ins & potpourri)

Mathematics at the Elementary One (E1) Level…An Overview for Parents
The study of mathematics can help children understand their culture and place in the on going story of human life. Math in the
Montessori environment can aid children by developing tools of the trade, along with reading and writing skills, and knowledge of numbers and mathematical operations. This
level of understanding is essential for

children living in an advance
technological world of science, computer, and high technology.
Montessori mathematics is presented to excite the child’s imagination. This allows children to work with their hands, follow sequential order, and receive presentations in the context of history and culture. With this approach, excitement and inquisitiveness for mathematics is developed. Children gain a deeper understanding of the decimal system, its function, and the value of numbers which moves them forward to a more abstract level of work; and as a result, allowing them to grasp the concepts of geometry, fractions, and decimals. The Elementary Two Level of mathematics builds on E1 concepts

“Whoever touches the life of a child touches the most sensitive point of a whole which has roots in the most distant past and climbs toward the infinite future…”
--Dr. Maria Montessori

IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER - MARK YOUR CALENDARS! – WE LOVE NORTHGLADE!!!

· October 15- 19 - MEAP Testing for Grades 3rd-6th. Children learn to explore, expand, and excel! You are invited to visit classrooms during the school year to gain a deep understanding of how and what students learn. Below are some commonly asked questions about Montessori:

Where did Montessori come from? Montessori (pronounced MON-tuh-SORE-ee) education was founded in 1907 by Dr. Maria Montessori , the first woman in Italy to become a physician. She based her educational methods on scientific observation of children’s learning processes.

How is Montessori Different from Traditional Education?
Montessori emphasizes learning though all fives senses. Developmentally appropriate materials of interest are presented in small groups and one-on-one. Children work at their own pace and explore activities from hundreds of possibilities. Traditionalists set goals for the majority not individual students.

Visit our fine school at
http://www.northglademontessori.org/

Magnificent Maria Montessori…
“Only the best for the smallest.”

-----------------------------------------------------

IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER - MARK YOUR CALENDARS! – WE LOVE NORTHGLADE!!

September 17-20 – Scholastic Book Fair at Northglade in the Cafeteria.

Thursday, September 20th – Fundraiser presented to families.

Friday, September 21st – No School!

Thursday, September 27th – Open House from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Thursday, September 27th – Ronald McDonald Fire Drill at 9:40 a.m.

Tuesday, October 2nd – Picture Day (Smile!) & Picture Retakes on October 24th

October 3rd-4th - Mobile Dentist Unit

Tuesday, October 9th – PTO/School Improvement Meeting begins at 6:30 p.m.

Wednesday, October 10th – Fire Drill & Prevention Assembly

November (Date TBD) – Skate Party from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

December 13th & 14th – Vision & Hearing Screening & Re-Checks on January 17th.

RPPoenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11600291.post-48044318917771043942007-05-21T18:45:00.000-07:002007-05-21T15:40:50.831-07:00
MONDAY EXPRESS

NORTHGLADE MONTESSORI MAGNET SCHOOL

(269)337-0700

Dr. Terina Harvey, Proud Principal

Kalamazoo Public Schools
<st1:date year="2007" day="5" month="2">Monday, May 21, 2007

---------------------------------------

</st1:date>
<span style="font-size: 10pt;
