Do You Know the Basics of Childhood Asthma?
It seems like many parents are talking about childhood asthma these days. Schools across the state have reported in an increased number of children with asthmatic conditions. As a precautionary measure, we will discuss the following questions at our PTO meeting in November.
What is Asthma?
Asthma (Az-muh) is a chronic disease that affects your airways (the tubes that carry air in and out of your lungs). The inside walls of your airways become inflamed (swollen) making the airways very sensitive and strongly reactive to allergens.
What are the Symptoms?
The symptoms of asthma for most children include coughing, wheezing and difficulty breathing, and they may be brought on or triggered by having a cold, changes in the weather, exercise or exposure to cigarette smoke, pollen, mold, animals, and pollution. If you can learn the things that trigger your child’s asthma problems, it can help to avoid them.
How Do You Prevent an Asthma Attack?
The goal of treating asthma is that your child be symptom free and able to perform his/her normal activities. Asthma should not usually limit your child’s activities, unless s/he is having an asthma attack at the time. In addition to avoiding triggers, asthma is prevented by taking daily preventative medications. Read more about asthma at http://www.pediatrics.about.com/
November’s Grace & Courtesy Focal Points:
Walk slowly and use care when transporting lunches in bins.
When delivering messages, use good eye contact, clearly state the reason for your visit, and wait patiently for a reply.
Use actions and words that show appreciation for others.
Needs List for our Fine School
1) Napkins and cups for snacks.
2) Cleaning supplies (child-size brooms, dust pans, sweepers, dust cloths, and buckets). Room fresheners (plug-ins & potpourri).
Welcome to the American Montessori Society Dedicated Team Members
This week we are excited to share our work with a group of Montessori experts. We will hold conversations about best practices. As reported at the PTO meeting earlier this year, we look forward to receiving useful information about our school and sharing it with you in the future.
“It is the child who makes the man (or woman), and no man (or woman) exists who was not made by the child s/he once was.”
