Build Relationships by Telling Stories

Sharing stories helps build the relationship between parent and child. And it does a lot more. By listening to stories, children hear the words they will learn to read. Plus they’ll be inspired to tell stories themselves. By telling stories, children improve their language and speaking skills.

But where do you get story ideas? From the people, places and happenings in your own life, says the author of a new book on storytelling. Start by thinking about a place where the story happened. Talk about when it happened, and the characteristics of the people involved. Once you can picture these things, it’s easier to “see” and talk about what happened-the plot of the story. And don’t forget to describe how things smelled, tasted, felt, and sounded. A good time to tell stories is during family get-to-gethers. More people can fill-in and share in remembering. When your child tells a story: Listen closely. Ask: “And then what happened?” to urge the story along. Be enthusiastic. And if you don’t understand some part of the story, take time to let your child explain. Try your hand at storytelling today to reap the benefits of tomorrow. Your child(ren) will enjoy this special activity. (Source: Donald Davis, Telling Your Own Stories, 1993.)

We Appreciate Our Wonderful Parents

Thank you for attending the successful Bring Your Parent To Lunch event. We were proud to serve over 200 parents on Friday, May 19th. Students and staff were excited about welcoming and thanking you for all your hard work with making teaching and learning a positive experience for all this year. Without parents and other helpful supporters, goals would be difficult to achieve at Northglade. We look forward to partnering with you during the 2006-2007 school year.
