Do You Encourage Reading for Fun?

Most children learn how to read in school. But they learn to love to read at home. Here’s a quiz to see whether you’re giving your kids the gift of a love of reading. Give yourself five points for something you usually do, zero points for something you never do—or any score in between you think you deserve.

___ My child has a library card. We make regular trips to the library.

__ We usually set aside some time each day for reading. We turn off the TV during reading time.

__We share what we’re reading. I read aloud to my child. S/he reads aloud to me.

__ I help my child find books about his/her special interests.

__I sometimes give books as gifts.

How did you score?

About 20 means you are helping your child learn to read for fun. Fifteen to 19 points is average. Below 15? Try some of the ideas in the quiz to get your child reading for pleasure.

Tips for Parents: Discipline with Love!

The way parents discipline tells children whether or not they are respected as human beings. Your approach can either build – or destroy your child’s self-respect and respect for authority. Child expert Benjamin Spock reminds us that “The main source of good discipline is growing up in a loving family, being loved and learning to love in return.” Children need lots of love and approval. Your child’s desire to please you is one of your most effective discipline tools. So praise and hug your child often.
