PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES ARE IMPORTANT…PLEASE ATTEND!

As Montessorians, we pledge to hold the highest expectations for the academic achievement and social/emotional development of all students. Learn about our commitment to your child(ren) by attending the scheduled Parent-Teacher Conferences next week. Explore the wonderful activities and materials used to provide your child(ren) with enriched and quality educational experiences.

Parents, please be prepared to speak with our caring teachers about your child(ren)’s learning goals, academic progress, homework suggestions, peer interactions, social development goals, and other topics deemed important. Teachers will share work records and planners with assignments and deadlines (for E1 and E2 students).

We look forward to welcoming you to conferences on November 7 & 9, 2005. Please also feel free to tour the beautiful school environment, sign up to volunteer for upcoming events, and contribute to our school improvement efforts.

Don’t Forget…

Items ordered to support this semester’s fundraiser can be picked up today. We would like to thank all parents for participating and also those who were able to help fill orders.

Encouraging Academic Effort

The experts say that the more parents do to help their child feel successful, the more s/he will strive for success. Helpful tips include the following:

  • Turn setbacks into learning opportunities. Tell your child that everyone makes mistakes. The important thing is to learn from all mistakes.
  • Encourage your child to use positive self-talk: “I have studied the lesson. I know the facts. I am going to do well in class today.”
  • Point out the small successes along the way: “You did better on this week’s quiz. Keep it up and you’ll raise that grade before you know it!”
  • Be a model learner by letting your child know that learning never ends.Source: www.parent-institute.com

Friendly Parent Room Available During the School Day (Please Plan on Visiting!)

Last year, we were able to organize a pleasant work and/or relaxation area for parents at Northglade. We are very proud to once again invite parents to visit the Parent Room to check out interesting reading materials, use the computer and telephone, attend meetings, relax and work on personal matters, etc.

Classroom Harvest Celebrations Held on Thursday, October 27, 2005. (See Classroom Newsletters for Details.)

Northglade Families and Staff Reach Out to Help Katrina Victims

Congratulations on your efforts to assist families affected by the devasting hurricane. Due to your generosity and caring hearts, our school-family collected over $800 and, through the Scholastic Children's Aid Program, sent 430 books to the American Red Cross. Families and classrooms mobilized to collect coins, sell Lolli and Penxcil Grams, baked goods, and stuffed animaly. Donations were also received from local businesses. Thank you for being an awesome school-family.

Important Testing Continues...

This week, please be sure to prepare your second grade child(ren) for three days of testing (October 18-20, 2005). The Cognitive Abilities Test will be administered to chart achievement in mathematics and language. Students are encouraged to get plenty of rest, eat healthy meals, and do their personal best on the test.

Food Baskets Needed...

If you are able, please give to those Northglade families in need this season. We are now collecting canned goods, boxed foods, and gift cards to local grocery stores. Send all items to the school office starting tomorrow. We plan on preparing and sending food baskets to families on a weekly basis throughout October, November, and December. Thank you for your support.

IMPORTANT NEWS…PLEASE READ!!!
Parents + Teachers = Student Success
We realize that parents lead very busy lives. Much time is spent staying on top of family routines and full schedules. Understanding that more hours are needed in a day to complete goals, we are requesting parents to commit one day a week to participate in school activities. At Northglade, we believe that parental involvement impacts student achievement and attitudes.

Please plan on visiting or contacting your
child(ren)’s teacher(s) on a weekly basis to ask the following important questions:

  • How is my child doing on all work assignments? Are there any past due or poorly completed work assignments?
  • Does my child work with focus and concentration? Is there a concern about being off-task and talking?

Parents are encouraged to request daily student behavior or academic checklists when appropriate. Copies of student work records may also be provided. As a courtesy, parents can expect calls from the office when students are chronically late with completing work. Thank you for partnering with our caring staff to achieve favorable outcomes.

Thank You For Your Involvement!

Because of you, we experienced an outstanding Open House this semester. We enjoyed meeting moms, dads, grandparents, and other relatives. It was great sharing with our families about the Montessori program. Please help us spread the word about our new magnet focus. To show our enthusiasm for learning and working together as a community at Northglade, students and staff sing our Montessori jingle at the beginning of each day. Please take a moment to sing this great jingle with your child (to the tune of “A Tisket, A Tasket”):

Amazing, amazing

Our school is so amazing

A Montessori Magnet School

Right here in our own Kalamazoo

Here we are at Northglade School

Where Montessori-learning is really cool

We work and play together each day

In the Montessori way

Respect for each other

The environment too,

Global awareness in all we do

Amazing, amazing

Our school is so amazing

A Montessori Magnet School

Right here in our own Kalamazoo
